 Foolishness

How many licks does it take to get to the center of stupidity?

I have no idea but I, for some reason, continue to lick and lick and I never can find the center of my stupidity.

I knew there was one out there somewhere, I just didn't realize it was me

 The Mask

Once again, the gremlins are at work but they are slacking on the job.

I have snatched onto a thought without them taking it from me. Maybe not such a great thought but a thought none the less.

I was sitting here looking at the background of my blog and thinking to myself, "Why do I have this mask up here?” I didn't really come up with a definite answer. My first answer would be because I like it. My second would be because I like it.

It did get me to thinking about some silly stuff that probably won't come to a point (damn Gremlins ).

Anyway....

These types of masks have always intrigued me. Something about them draws me to them. Maybe it's the mysteriousness that they invoke or maybe it's my long time fascination with an era that no longer exists.

The idea of the mask was to be anonymous in the crowd and have people guess who you were. You could pretend to be someone else if only for a little while. You could make it as hard or easy as you wanted for people to discover the true you. It was fun trying to figure out who was behind the mask. It would be like one huge guessing game. There was that air of mystery about everyone. Once the mask was removed, the game no longer held the attraction it once did. The ‘puzzle’ had been solved. Game over. No more fun.

What about the ‘masks’ that people wear today? Even though there is no ‘mask’ that covers their eyes and part of their face, some people put on a mask everyday that they wake up. Maybe it is in the form of makeup. Put a little blush on, followed by some eyeliner and mascara and voila, you’ve got a masked person. Take the man that grows a beard…….His eyes and nose are out for the world to see but his lower jaw and lips are usually hidden from the world. Maybe this is a reverse mask. Cover the lower half while the upper half is visible.

Then there is the invisible mask. This is the one that a person lives with day in and day out but is not immediately, if ever, visible to the outside world. This by far, is the most dangerous mask. It is the mask that the person has personalized so well that even he or she has forgotten that it is there and that is being worn every single day. This is the mask that one lives behind and becomes one with. It sometimes takes over their being. They become what the mask is or represents.

What makes a person put on a mask in the first place? What makes them choose a certain mask? Is it all about the way the mask looks? Do they want to be what the mask represents? Maybe they put the mask on hoping to play the game and found that the mask is as much a part of them as when there was no mask. Maybe they just want to be somebody else for a while. Maybe just maybe, they want to play the game.

 Gremlins

For the past couple of weeks, it’s been a steady stream of chaos swirling around up there. I haven’t quite figured out the reason behind this whirlwind of thoughts. It happens sometimes. They’re in there waiting to come out but somehow they shrink back when I make that mad grab for one. It’s like little gremlins in there just begging me to come get them then at the last minute they turn around and look at me as if to say “What the fuck do you want?” then turn and flee back to their tiny little caves where they dwell.

Should I be afraid of these gremlins?

No. Maybe. Yeah, I probably should be afraid but I’m not. I’ve pretty much learned to get along with them and I found out that they really aren’t all that bad. Just a little frustrating sometimes. I have learned how to ignore the wind they churn up once they get going even when what I really want to do is stand right in the middle of the wind and catch every breeze. Unfortunately, I’m not able to catch every breeze that the gremlins stir up. This just is not possible.

Just when I think I have a thought coming out, one of those little gremlins run by and POOF, there went the thought. Now I have no idea where they take these thoughts when they steal them from me. I think there must be some deep magic cave in there somewhere that only the head gremlin knows about. The little peon gremlins have to do all the leg work for Big Daddy gremlin, then when Big Daddy gremlin collects enough thoughts for whatever time period he sees fit, he’ll let all of the peon gremlins off the hook and they get to take a much needed vacation.

The only sad thing is that the peon gremlins don’t get that much time off for good behavior and I'm not sure what Big Daddy gremlin has planned. After all, he does have a cave full of my thoughts hidden somewhere.
